What Is Floor T-Molding?

Transition molding, or T-molding, is a T-shaped strip of wood or wood product that covers the narrow gap in the doorway between two adjacent floors.

Some types of floors, Particularly hardwood flooring require a 1 1/4-inch expansion gap between the two floors.

This gap allows for normal contraction and expansion of the flooring from foot traffic and seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. Use T-molding to visually connect two adjoining floors of the same height.

The Glue Down Method

  • Measure the exact width of the doorway between the floors. If your T-molding kit contains a metal track, measure and cut the metal track with tin snips. No Matches Found. Please try your search again.

  • Measure and cut the T-molding strip with a power saw for a crisp, clean cut.

  • Snap the metal track onto the bottom “T” strip of the T-molding. Press the track on so that the T-molding is securely in place.

  • Squeeze a 1/4-inch even bead of construction adhesive along the gap between the two floors.

  • Set the T-molding into the gap, pressing firmly so that the molding lips on each side of the strip rest firmly on both floors.

  • Wipe any glue that may have oozed out with a damp cloth.

  • Place several large strips of low-residue masking tape across the T-molding and onto both floors. The tape will keep the molding in place while the glue dries. Keep the tape in place overnight.

The Screw-Down Method

  • Measure the exact width of the doorway. Measure and cut the metal track with tin snips to the doorway width.

  • Measure and cut the T-molding strip with a power saw for a crisp, clean cut.

  • Place the metal track into the gap evenly between the two floors. Screw the track into the subfloor, using the predrilled holes to guide screw placement.

  • Snap the T-molding into the track, starting at one end of the T-molding and working your way down until the strip is in place. Press the molding down to ensure that the lips of both sides of the molding rest on the flooring.
